Türkiye to Launch a High-Speed Railway in the South by 2028
Türkiye plans to put a new high-speed railway line into operation by 2028, connecting four key southern cities — Mersin, Adana, Osmaniye and Gaziantep. This was announced by the country’s Minister of Transport and Infrastructure, Abdulkadir Uraloğlu.
According to the minister, construction of the strategically important railway line is already about 85% complete. Once the project is finished, travel time between the Mediterranean port city of Mersin and the major industrial center of Gaziantep will be reduced from approximately six hours to around two hours.
The project includes large-scale modernization of existing railway infrastructure as well as the construction of new high-speed sections designed for train speeds of up to 200 kilometers per hour. The total length of the route will be approximately 312.5 kilometers.
One of the main goals of the project is to strengthen the transport connection between Gaziantep’s industrial sector and the port of Mersin, providing faster and more efficient access to international markets.
The new railway line is expected to carry an average of about 3.1 million passengers per year, as well as up to 37 million tons of cargo, significantly contributing to the economic development of southern Türkiye.
