Turkish Tradition: Alanya to Have Municipal Tea Gardens

Alanya Mayor Osman Tarık Özçelik and his team implemented one of their first projects immediately after taking office – the opening of a municipal tea garden in the Iskele pier area: https://maps.app.goo.gl/V5eGrcpNSrHR6LJc9

Despite the winter season, this place already attracts between 3,000 and 5,000 visitors daily, and in summer, the number of guests is expected to at least double.

Even in the cold months, thousands of people come here, and the flow of visitors only increases in the high season! This is all thanks to the Halk Kart system, which allows people to enjoy tea at prices 60–70% lower than in the city center.

The success of this project has inspired the mayor to take further steps: soon, two more tea gardens will open in Alanya – one in the east and another in the west of the city. Additionally, there are plans to convert the Occo Beach complex into a municipal tea garden. Previously, this place was rented by a foreign entrepreneur, but the rent was disproportionately low for such a prime location. The authorities have already notified the tenants that they must vacate the premises upon contract expiration in February 2026.

Alanya is gaining even more modern and accessible places for relaxation – both for residents and tourists!

Tea Gardens – An Essential Part of Turkish Culture

Municipal tea gardens (halk çay bahçesi) are not just cafés – they are a true Turkish tradition that brings people together. Such cozy venues can be found in almost every city in Turkey – from bustling Istanbul to the resort areas of the Mediterranean coast. Here, both locals and tourists enjoy tea in a relaxed, friendly atmosphere, discussing news, playing backgammon, or simply admiring the views.

Unlike regular cafés, municipal tea gardens offer much lower prices. Tea here is not just a drink – it is a symbol of hospitality and socializing. Turks can sit at a table for hours, sipping several glasses of freshly brewed tea from traditional tulip-shaped glass cups.

Recently, the Turkish Supreme Court also banned the mandatory rental of sun loungers on beaches, even for private beach clubs along the coast. Beaches in Turkey are state-owned, and the shoreline is accessible for public use everywhere. You can swim and relax on the shore without renting a sun lounger, even if a private beach club is located there.
