On July 15, 2025, one of Alanya’s most scenic natural attractions — Sapadere Canyon — reopened for tourists and residents. The canyon had been temporarily closed following a rockfall on December 22, 2024. Thanks to a completed renovation and the implementation of engineering safety measures, the site is now fully safe to visit.
Located in the village of Sapadere, about 40 km east of Alanya’s city center in the foothills of the Taurus Mountains, the canyon is one of the key eco-tourism destinations in the region. With a length of about 750 meters, it attracts visitors with its crystal-clear waters, waterfalls, shaded wooden walkways, and cool climate — even during summer.
Under the leadership of the new mayor, Osman Tarık Özçelik, the Alanya Municipality opted for permanent rather than temporary safety measures. Steel protection tunnels were installed along tourist walkways to prevent rockfalls and ensure safe passage through the canyon.
The project was carried out in cooperation with universities, engineers, and occupational safety experts. A tender was held on May 28, 2025, the contract was signed on June 17, and the work was completed within 20 days. The total cost of the project was 3,055,478.40 Turkish liras, fully funded by the municipal budget of Alanya. Neither citizens nor local businesses were asked to contribute financially.
Mayor Osman Tarık Özçelik stated:
"This natural site may face difficulties every year. But if we turn a blind eye and only fix the consequences, as we did before, a disaster may eventually happen. Our goal is not to close Sapadere, but to make it safe and accessible for everyone."
He also refuted rumors about the canyon’s permanent closure or financial collections from local vendors:
"The municipality took full responsibility. We did not ask anyone for financial support."
Sapadere Canyon remains one of the region’s most important natural landmarks, a must-visit for both locals and tourists.
