Dubai to Eliminate Landfills by 2041: 4.5 Million Tonnes of Waste Already Converted into Energy
The main focus was the operation of the Waste-to-Energy Centre in Warsan. To date, over 4.5 million tonnes of waste have been processed here, with 62% diverted from landfills to energy recovery. These figures align with the emirate’s goal to gradually close all landfills over the next 15 years.
Later this year, the second phase of the plant’s expansion in Warsan will be launched, increasing waste processing capacity and generating more energy from waste.
The 92nd Council meeting was chaired by Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum. Vice-Chair Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer and Secretary-General Ahmed Buti Al Muhairbi, along with heads of key city departments and major companies, also attended.
According to Al Tayer, the Council continues to strengthen Dubai’s position as a global leader in sustainability and clean energy. The meeting reviewed strategic directions to accelerate carbon emission reduction and enhance the efficiency of the emirate’s energy sector. The Council annually evaluates program outcomes and introduces new initiatives to ensure continuous development while monitoring implementation phases.
Ahmed Buti Al Muhairbi emphasized that advanced technologies are being implemented to improve waste treatment and reuse. This work follows a comprehensive strategy based on circular economy principles and active private sector participation in government projects.
