Dubai has been named the world leader in urban transport efficiency, according to the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA). The study revealed that the city’s average travel time is just 13.7 minutes per 10 km — faster than in Sydney, Berlin, or Milan, and below the global average of 15.9 minutes.
A key contributor to improved urban mobility has been the Dubai Metro — the first metro system in the Arab Gulf countries. Over 16 years of operation, it has reduced total travel distance by 29.8 billion kilometers. By 2029, a new metro line worth AED 20.5 billion (around USD 5.6 billion) will be completed, strengthening the “20-minute city” concept through the integration of metro, bus, and marine transport systems.
Another advantage of Dubai’s transport infrastructure, experts note, is the cost efficiency of its projects. The cost of building one kilometer of metro in Dubai is 36% lower than in London and 55% lower than in Sydney. These investments, aligned with the Dubai Urban Plan 2040, not only enhance mobility but also stimulate the real estate market: property prices near transport hubs have risen by 6–16%, according to experts.
On October 16, the Dubai Municipality unveiled the Dubai Live platform at Gitex Global 2025. Powered by artificial intelligence, digital twins, and predictive analytics, the platform centrally monitors key urban processes, including permitting and land-use planning. It tracks construction, density, and transport activity while forecasting infrastructure needs. The goal is to improve governance, accelerate emergency response, and ensure the city’s sustainable development.
Another landmark mobility initiative is the Dubai Loop project — a futuristic, high-speed transportation system designed to connect key areas of the city in just minutes. The project aims to redefine urban mobility by reducing travel time, cutting carbon emissions, and supporting Dubai’s vision of becoming the smartest and most sustainable city in the world.
