Focus on Urban Renewal and Infrastructure Development
The June session of the Alanya Municipal Council was held under the chairmanship of Mayor Osman Tarık Özçelik. During the meeting, the mayor reviewed the municipality’s activities in May and outlined key development priorities, emphasizing that urban renewal efforts will extend beyond the city center to include Mahmutlar, Kestel, Konaklı, and Avsallar.
One of the main topics discussed was infrastructure modernization. According to the mayor, major upgrades at the central wastewater treatment plant have largely been completed. Aeration systems have been modernized, sedimentation units are now operational, and the facility’s capacity has been increased by 15,000 tons. Equipment for odor control is expected to be fully installed soon.
Transportation issues were also addressed. The continuation of the Eastern Ring Road is expected to significantly ease traffic congestion in Mahmutlar, where traffic density remains high. A land expropriation decision has already been made, and authorities hope the project will be completed as quickly as possible.
In the city center, large-scale renovation of streets and utility networks is ongoing. Part of Atatürk Avenue has already been upgraded, and further infrastructure improvements toward the eastern section are scheduled to begin in the coming months. Road repairs are also underway in rural areas affected by heavy rainfall, with the region experiencing record precipitation in recent months.
The mayor highlighted Alanya’s environmental achievements, noting that the city has received the national award for Best Environmental Education Program for the sixth consecutive year. The initiative includes coastal clean-up campaigns, recycling programs, and awareness activities aimed at young people.
May was a particularly active month in terms of cultural and sporting events. The city hosted festivals, exhibitions, theater performances, concerts, and international beach sports competitions. More than 3,000 participants visited Alanya for these events in just one month, contributing significantly to the local economy.
The municipality continues to reduce costs by expanding its in-house production capabilities. Authorities now produce asphalt, urban furniture, promotional materials, and part of the city’s landscaping internally, improving both cost efficiency and quality control.
Among upcoming plans are the development of a comprehensive transportation system, installation of electric vehicle charging stations, and implementation of social projects, including a public soup kitchen. Authorities also plan to strengthen environmental enforcement, including publicly identifying businesses that discharge waste into the sea.
The next municipal council meeting is scheduled for July 7.
